Exploring THC Beverages: Perspective From the Industry

Updated: 4 hours ago

We have been getting a lot of questions lately about THC beverages and how they fit into a hospitality setting. As this category continues to grow, we wanted to provide our members with some perspectives to consider and look into as you evaluate whether these products are the right fit for your venue.

While many of us in the industry were initially hesitant, seeing how these products function in real-world bar environments has opened up a new dialogue about how to integrate them thoughtfully. If your team is considering adding these to the menu, we’ve gathered some ideas and observations from the field to help you navigate the process.

As always, these are just perspectives to consider—every venue should do its own due diligence and ensure they are operating within the specific legal framework of their state and municipality.

1. Navigating Insurance & Licensing

The regulatory landscape for hemp-derived products is shifting quickly. Before a single can hits your fridge, it is a great idea to have a clear understanding of the "paperwork" side of things.

  • Insurance Check-In: It’s worth a conversation with your insurance provider to ensure your current liability coverage includes the sale of THC-infused products. Some policies may have specific exclusions or require riders for cannabis-adjacent sales.

  • Local Compliance: Licensing requirements vary wildly from state to state. Some areas require a specific hemp permit, while others may have restrictions on where these products can be stored or how they are displayed. Taking the time to verify these details with your local regulatory body ensures your program starts on a solid foundation.

2. Prioritizing Lower Measurements

One of the biggest questions operators have is about "crossfading"—the interaction between alcohol and THC. While many bars report that guests tend to stick to one category or the other, keeping the measurement of THC low per serving is a widely recognized strategy for maintaining a safe, comfortable atmosphere.

  • The "Slow Down" Option: Some guests choose a THC beverage specifically to pivot away from alcohol later in the evening. Offering lower measurement options (like 2.5mg or 5mg) allows guests to enjoy a social buzz without the intensity that comes with higher concentrations.

  • Safety in Small Numbers: Most venues find that staying under 10mg per serving helps prevent the "too much, too fast" experience. In many markets, 5mg is becoming the standard for a single serving, providing a predictable experience for the guest and more peace of mind for the staff.

3. Consistency in Format

The way a product is served can be just as important as what is in it. When it comes to THC, the format often dictates how accurately a measurement is delivered to the guest.

  • Pre-Canned vs. Bulk: Many operators are opting for pre-canned, ready-to-drink (RTD) options exclusively. This removes the "human error" element of manual measurement.

  • The Risk of Manual Pours: Unlike a standard pour of spirit, even a small variance in a high-potency THC liquid can significantly change the guest's experience. Using pre-measured cans ensures that the amount on the label is exactly what ends up in the glass. It also protects your staff from the pressure of having to accurately measure out substances from large-format "spirit-style" bottles that may contain upwards of 200mg.

The goal for any new category in hospitality is to create an environment where both staff and guests feel confident. By focusing on education, clear measurements, and consistent formats, venues can explore these new trends while keeping the focus where it belongs: on a great, safe guest experience.

We encourage all members to consult with legal counsel and industry-specific training programs to stay updated on the latest THC beverage regulations in their area.
