City of New Orleans Partners with SAFE Bar Network to Provide De-escalation Training for Nightlife Establishments

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Office of Nighttime Economy (ONE) is proud to announce a new partnership with the SAFE Bar Network, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping nightlife venues create safer environments for both staff and patrons.

This partnership is in direct response to feedback ONE has received from New Orleans nightlife businesses in regards to the need for opportunities to equip themselves with life-saving skills. By obtaining a certification through SAFE Bar Network, New Orleans bars, music venues, and other nightlife establishments will gain the skills to prevent overconsumption, harassment, and other forms of harm - tailored specifically for hospitality businesses. These one-hour trainings equip teams with proactive bystander intervention and customer service skills to create a workplace culture focused on increasing safety and giving everyone a safe night out.

“The Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy is fully committed to providing nightlife establishments with top-tier training opportunities that prioritize the safety for both staff and patrons,” said Michael Ince, Director of the Office of Nighttime Economy. This partnership not only connects our nightlife community to a national network of peers but also equips them with practical tools to prevent and safely navigate challenging situations.”

SAFE Bar Network’s training meets state and local requirements for sexual harassment and active bystander intervention education. Trainings are offered at no cost to venues, can accommodate up to 50 participants, and are delivered in-venue at a time that works best for staff. Venues that complete the program may also benefit from insurance premium discounts, and public recognition through the Network’s national promotional efforts.

Haleigh Harrold, Executive Director of the SAFE Bar Network, explains, “The training goes beyond individual active bystander skills — it focuses on building an ongoing workplace conversation about noticing concerning behavior, intervening effectively, and supporting one another.”

Current SAFE Bar Network members in the New Orleans area include 12 Mile Limit, The Domino, Barrel Proof, and Kajun's Pub.

This initiative aligns with ONE’s broader mission to strengthen New Orleans’ nightlife infrastructure by supporting workforce safety, retention, and well-being. By connecting venues with a trusted national resource, ONE aims to reinforce a culture of safety and hospitality across the city’s vibrant late-night economy.
