Thriving Nightlife: Spotlight on Sacramento’s Groundbreaking Collaboration

Creating a vibrant nightlife scene requires a community-wide effort. Across the country, forward-thinking cities recognize that vibrant entertainment districts thrive when patron safety, staff well-being, and hospitality go hand in hand.

Through collaborative partnerships with nighttime economy offices in cities like New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and Sacramento, the SAFE Bar Network equips hospitality teams with active bystander and de-escalation skills. This proactive approach prevents overconsumption, harassment, and harm before it escalates—while helping businesses increase profitability, improve guest retention, and reduce staff turnover.

As SAFE Bar Network Executive Director Haleigh Harrold explains:

"The training isn’t just about reacting. It is about creating a culture where prevention is part of everyday conversation."

Sacramento Leaders Set the Standard for Proactive Safety

In Sacramento, local leadership has turned that philosophy into action. Thanks to close collaboration with John Adair and Tina Lee-Vogt at the City of Sacramento Economic Development Department, along with the Sacramento Police Department Entertainment Team led by Sergeant Nicholas Bassett, local venues are gaining access to practical tools that make a tangible difference on the floor.

Sergeant Bassett played a pivotal role in encouraging venues to participate, recognizing the value of proactive education over reactive policing:

"I felt it brought a training offering we did not already have. It allowed me to support safety in the nightlife and strengthen relationships by supporting our operators outside of my enforcement role."

Several cornerstone Sacramento establishments recently completed the training, demonstrating their commitment to guest care and team support:

By participating in the program, these teams learned how to identify subtle signs of discomfort or risk, intervene early through practical de-escalation tactics, and foster an environment where everyone can enjoy a safe, memorable night out.

Together we've giving an estimated 99,000 bargoers a safe night out in Sacramento this year.

A Growing Movement Across the Nation

Venues that complete the training officially join the SAFE Bar Network, earning access to member resources, window clings, and branded coasters that let guests know staff are ready and equipped to help if someone feels unsafe or uncomfortable.

Sacramento’s participating venues join a rapidly expanding national community of care. To date, over 430 bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues across 36 states have become members, representing more than 14,000 hospitality professionals trained to look out for one another and their guests.

When municipal leaders, law enforcement, and venue operators unite behind hospitality teams, the entire district flourishes. We are proud to celebrate our Sacramento partners for leading the charge.
