Through our one-hour trainings, bar staff learn to:
āļø Spot unsafe behavior
āļø Intervene with confidence
āļø Create safer spaces for everyone
āCreating a safer night out for the Telluride community is part of the San Miguel Resource Centerās mission to prevent domestic and sexual violence, [Lisa] Sebree explained. While alcohol doesnāt cause assault, roughly 60% of assaults involve alcohol, according to Sebree.
Dustin Clements, a partner of Communion Wine Bar in Mountain Village, echoed the need for SAFE Bar trainings locally, noting that Telluride faces the same nightlife safety concerns as larger cities, āI think itās something that kind of gets overlooked being in a small town, and we maybe have some problems swept under the rug,ā Clements said.
The SAFE Bar program will help create āa safe environment that is welcoming to everybody,ā Clements said.ā
The sessions raise important questions about bar-wide policies and often leave employees feeling more connected to their coworkers. For [Executive Director Haleigh] Harrold, working toward a safer night out with the service and hospitality industry is āpure joy.ā Harrold sees the hospitality industry as āuniquely positionedā in the work of harm prevention. Bar staff have frequent opportunities to intervene in unsafe situations and are talented and passionate about customer service.
āTheyāre doing it because they love people, and they have incredible people skills,ā Harrold said.
Harrold emphasized that anyone can be a part of the SAFE Bar Network. To get involved, people can attend a local or online session, support certified restaurants and bars, refer venues to the SAFE Bar Network, become facilitators, and connect with the network on social media.ā
