Responding to a Mental Health Crisis in Your Venue

You don’t need to be a therapist to make a difference—just a calm, caring presence.

In bars and nightlife spaces, we expect energy, connection, and celebration. But sometimes, guests or even coworkers may show signs of a mental health crisis—and that’s when your role as an everyday active bystander becomes even more powerful.

The good news: you don’t have to fix it. You just have to notice, support, and connect the person to help if they need it.

Signs of a Possible Mental Health Crisis

Keep an eye out for these behaviors, especially if they’re sudden or seem out of character:

  • Someone who is extremely withdrawn, tearful, or visibly overwhelmed

  • Talk about hopelessness, self-harm, or suicide

  • Confusion, disorientation, or trouble communicating clearly

  • Unusual aggression, agitation, or fear

  • Panic symptoms like difficulty breathing or shaking

What You Can Do

Here’s how you can respond in a way that’s supportive and safe—for them and for you:

1. Stay Calm & Compassionate

Your energy matters. Speak in a low, calm voice. Give space. Avoid touch unless safety is a concern.

2. Connect, Don’t Confront

Lead with empathy, not solutions. Try:

  • “Hey, are you okay? I noticed you seem upset.”

  • “Is there anything I can do to help right now?” Avoid brushing them off with phrases like “You’re fine” or “Just calm down.”

3. Keep It Simple & Safe

Small gestures go a long way:

  • Offer water or a quieter space if possible

  • Suggest they call a friend or loved one

  • Loop in a manager, especially if you feel out of your depth

When to Get Help

Sometimes, the safest thing you can do is get backup. Call for help if:

  • They say they want to hurt themselves or someone else

  • They’re not able to communicate or take care of themselves

  • You or anyone else feels physically unsafe

After the Incident

Supporting someone in crisis can take a toll. Make sure to:

  • Check in with your team — your feelings matter, too

  • Document what happened for safety and clarity

  • Know your local mental health crisis resources so you’re ready next time

At SAFE Bar Network, we believe that noticing someone in distress and choosing to act with compassion can change outcomes. You don’t have to be a mental health expert to care. You just have to be present, supportive, and willing to help them take the next step.

Let’s keep making our venues places where everyone can feel seen, safe, and supported.
