How to Spot a Fake ID: A Guide for Bar and Venue Staff

Whether you're serving drinks at a bar, checking IDs at the door of a club, or working security at a concert, verifying a guest’s age is part of your job—and a vital one. With fake IDs becoming more sophisticated and accessible, it’s important for hospitality and nightlife staff to know how to spot them quickly and confidently.
Many state Alcohol Beverage Control agencies and licensing authorities recommend the “FLAG” method for verifying IDs: Feel, Look, Ask, and Give Back (or Seize).
F – Feel the ID
Start by physically examining the ID:
Texture and Thickness: Real IDs are made from high-quality materials and should feel sturdy. If the ID feels flimsy, overly thin, or unusually slick, that could be a sign it’s fake.
Edges and Surface: Check for peeling, bubbling, or rough edges that suggest tampering or low-quality printing.
Embedded Features: Many states embed raised text or other tactile security features—run your finger across the surface to feel for them.

L – Look at the Details
Always inspect IDs under good lighting. Every state has its own unique design and security elements, which can include:
Holograms and color-shifting images that change when tilted.
UV features that only show under blacklight.
Laser-perforated images or microprinting that are difficult to replicate.
Orientation clues: Many states issue vertical IDs to minors under 21 and horizontal ones to adults.
Expiration and issue dates: Watch out for outdated IDs or those with inconsistent formatting.
Don’t rush—taking an extra 10 seconds can make all the difference.
A – Ask Questions
Once you've reviewed the physical ID, engage the person holding it. A real ID holder should be able to answer simple questions without hesitation:
Ask their birthdate or address without letting them look at the ID.
Request their signature and compare it to the one on the card.
Ask a follow-up question like their zodiac sign or where they got their license.

People using fake IDs often struggle with these details—or reveal nervousness under pressure.
G – Give Back or Seize
Once you've finished your check:
If the ID appears valid and the person seems consistent, return it and proceed.
If you believe the ID is fake, you can refuse service.
In many states, you may have the legal right to seize a suspected fake ID—but laws vary, so make sure to:
Know your state’s policy on ID confiscation.
Provide a receipt if required.
Turn the ID over to law enforcement within the required time frame (often 24 hours).
Check your local alcohol board’s guidance or consult your venue’s legal policy for specifics.
Legal Protections for Staff
Most states offer some protection to employees who check IDs in good faith. That means if you take reasonable steps to verify the ID and believe it to be legitimate, you may be protected from liability—even if the ID turns out to be fake.
However, this protection only applies if you're following the proper procedure. Consistent training and documentation are key.

Fake IDs will always be a challenge in the hospitality industry, but with the FLAG method and a little vigilance, your staff can confidently manage ID checks and reduce legal risk.
