Partner Spotlight: Jessica in Jefferson City

We're grateful for our partners across the country working to expand safe nightlife programming.

Meet our partner Jessica in Jefferson City, Missouri

Success:  A success I've had is completing the active bystander training at Big Whiskey's This was my first experience facilitating a SAFE Bar training session and I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and engagement of the group. The participants truly made the training their own and were able to point out the ways that they can depend on each other to keep everyone safe. It's clear to see that people who work in the service industry care about sexual violence prevention, and I'm proud to be a part of these culture changes.

Challenge: A challenge I've dealt with is trying to engage other bar owners and managers in Jefferson City. I've been working at RACS on community sexual violence prevention for close to four months now, and it is still a struggle gaining any sort of momentum with this effort. There are many owners and managers who are very interested in scheduling the training for their staff, but unfortunately, it continues to be put on the back burner. There are also a handful of bars that have outright turned me down. It is an ongoing effort to create safe spaces in Jefferson City.

Fills My Cup:  It brings me joy to see all of the people in my community who work hard for others. Every person at RACS puts all of their effort and energy into caring for survivors. There are so many injustices in our world and it's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the bad things, but it's important to remember the good. This community of advocates (including everyone involved in the SAFE Bar Network) devotes their work to improving the lives of others and making their city a better place. I'm proud to be surrounded by so many amazing people who go above and beyond for others.
