Partner Spotlight: Leah and Kelsea

Updated: Nov 7

We're grateful for our partners across the country working to expand safe nightlife programming.

Meet our partner Leah and Kelsea in Lansing, Michigan

Success: In our search for connection and partnership in creating safe nightlife, we were often met with a lot of enthusiasm. Through door-to-door pitching and conversations, we established great connections with several bar owners in the Greater Lansing area, who were then able to connect us with other venue owners. We were able to train two bars - including both seasoned and new staff - within a month and have another scheduled. We were so excited to see the intervention skills many of these employees already possess and were happy to facilitate great conversations on utilizing these skills.

Challenge: We've had a few challenges and growth opportunities in this work. The greatest challenge has been bouncing back from particularly strong pushback from some venues on becoming SAFE Bar certified. Through this, though, we've been able to review how we're approaching these conversations in being more apparent with our intent not to tell people how to do their job, but simply expand on active bystander skills they already have to shift culture to be safer for the community and venue clients.

Fills My Cup: In our community, and through this work in particular, being met with enthusiasm from so many people and being able to hear and see the incredible skills and desire people already have to create safe nightlife has really given us joy and brought us hope. Becoming better connected to our community in general has given us many opportunities to see the amazing things others are doing both inside and outside of this work, which gives us hope and allows us to find ways we all can work together toward bettering our community.
